Dangers of Offshore Plastic Surgery

You have to be careful and do research involving who and where you are planning to undergo plastic surgery, especially if you are considering in getting a cosmetic procedure done outside the United States, especially those countries that claim to be much cheaper than anywhere else. These procedures are sometimes performed in dubious surgeon's offices instead of in hospitals because they do have not the advantage to be accredited by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities as it can be a guarantee in America.

Any surgical procedure may involve several risks and side effects such as dizziness, nausea and excessive pain, but may also have other side effects such as significant bleeding requiring a transfusion, infection at the site of the incision, requiring additional surgery that may leave bigger scars, accumulation of clear fluid beneath the wound which may need to be drained with a needle, drop in body temperature as a result of long operative procedures and a few others that may not be immediately present must be considered. You may find that the proper treatment is not available in foreign countries if these conditions do occur.

Although the best place to get your plastic surgery done is the United States, people are gradually seeking other options since plastic surgery procedures are generally not covered by health insurance. Some foreign countries are offering less expensive procedures when compared to the United States but they may not be as safe as you would expect.

Among foreign countries we can mention are Thailand and Mexico as the major and most reputable surgery destinations for not only cosmetic surgery, but also cardiac and other surgery procedures that must be considered because of the cost issues and the low risk of dangers in getting a cosmetic surgery in such countries.

Thailand is an easy country to travel in for Americans and most surgeons claim to be trained and up to US standards, while Mexico is definitely a great choice because the lower cost structure in this country and the fact that there are plastic surgeons and clinics exclusively for American patients and even they have American plastic Surgeons. The Mexican physicians are fully qualified to work in the United States but again for cost reasons, it is more convenient for them operate in Mexico.

Apart from these destinations, other countries are not as safe for qualified plastic surgery procedures, except those clinics in Brazil, Argentina, Eastern European countries, and India that have started to offer plastic surgery packages but do not have a reputation yet to know the exact dangers that would be taken by these offshore plastic surgeons. The more developed the country the best chances you will have to avoid the risks that are associated with any type of plastic surgery.

Cost-effective alternatives with reputable surgeons in Central America countries such as Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama are hard to recommend and involve other dangers such as unstable political condition in some of those countries and poor developing conditions that do not guarantee, among other factors, the surgeons qualifications. It is known that Cuba has the best practitioners in several health medical disciplines, but American citizens can not reach those facilities due the concerns of the existing US trade embargo of the island.

In general terms, the best way to avoid the dangers of offshore plastic surgery is doing enough internet research before take the challenge. Investigate the surgeons and the hospitals or clinics and pay attention to the surgeon's credentials and testimonials if any making sure they are not fake. Post in related forums asking for feedback or shared experiences. Play it safe and do not pay for any service before you arrive to the offshore clinic that will attend your request.

In addition, use your credit card instead of cash to pay for any service in order to get your money back if for any reason you are not satisfied with the results or attention. Try to arrive before the day scheduled for your cosmetic procedure to familiarize yourself with the clinic facilities and ask all your questions to the surgeon in charge and observe his/her attitude.
