Choosing a Plastic Surgeon

As the popularity of plastic surgery grows, so is the number of physicians performing cosmetic procedures. It's important you understand the ability and credentials of the person you choose to be your plastic surgeon.

The first step is to create a list of surgeons that perform the procedure that you are interested in having done. This can be done by gathering recommendations from friends, and family, your family doctor and through internet research. The next step is to narrow the choices down to 3 or 4 possible candidates. To narrow it down you will need to do some checking on them. If you know people that have had cosmetic procedures done you can talk to them to get their feedback. If they aren't happy with the work they likely will know of another surgeon that is worth checking into. Find out if the doctor has done a plastic surgery residency prior to starting their practice. Contact the hospitals or offices to verify the type of training and experience the surgeon has had. Check if the doctor is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

After narrowing your choices to 2-4 doctors, schedule a consultation with each. They will give you their opinions on what type of surgery is best for you and guide you on what to expect for results. They should tell you about the possible negative aspects as well as the benefits. The doctor will also cover what type of anesthesia is to be used, post-surgical protocol and their fees. It is important to verify the location is an accredited operating facility. Accredited facilities have been reviewed by an independent organization and means the facility meets national health and safety standards.
